When I sat with the HR director (who happens to be the Presidents daughter)–I asked her, what’s in it for the employee? Why would the really good person want to work for your company when they have so many other choices? She handed me a sheet with the list below:
- They pay very competitive wages
- The job is full-time
- Their employees are in a bonus program
- The shop is air conditioned
- They have a 401k plan
- a health care plan with a paid HRA
- Paid holidays and vacations
- A catered lunch for all employees the day before paid holidays
- And you get your birthday off with pay!
She told me that their reputation is one of safety and cleanliness. She told me a story of how an ex-employee called her to tell her that he missed the management staff; the freedom he had to find better ways to do things. How he was not micro-managed, and was encouraged to take ownership of his job.
In her thirteen years on the job, less than five folks have ever given notice, and the average employee tenure is almost eighteen years.
It was clear that this is a great place to work!
